SLIM MLS Scholarship Application

(Scholarships are not offered during the summer semester)

SLIM MLS Scholarship Application Guidelines

 

SLIM MLS scholarship recipients are chosen on the basis of their high motivation, academic achievement, as well as in the quality of their involvement in their profession and community.

 
  1. You must be admitted to ESU’s School of Library and Information Management.
  2. You must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
  3. You must have completed at least six credit hours of SLIM coursework by the time the scholarship is to be disbursed.
  4. You must be enrolled in at least six credit hours of SLIM coursework during fall and spring semesters.
  5. You must have no unresolved incomplete grades and/or unresolved Progress Review remediation.

The SLIM MLS Scholarship Checklist

  • Complete the SLIM MLS Scholarship application form (link to Microsoft Word application form at the top of this page).
  • Compose a cover letter that explains your interest in being awarded a SLIM MLS Scholarship, focusing on any special academic or professional circumstance or goal that would warrant consideration for a scholarship. 
  • Within your letter, identify any special certificate or licensure program to which you have applied or intend to apply and/or describe any special professional interests you might have, such as a special interest in government documents or rural librarianship. 
  • Submit with your letter an updated professional resume that includes a description of relevant professional activities in which you are actively engaged.
  • Compose a three- to five-page essay in response to the academic year’s announced Scholarship Essay Topic.  (See "SLIM MLS Scholarship Essay Topics," below).
  • Email the completed SLIM MLS Scholarship application form, cover letter, response essay, and resume as Word attachments to:  slimbusiness@emporia.edu.   In the email’s subject line, please identify your campus/cohort by choosing one of the following:

  • IMPORTANT:  Scholarship recipients and scholarship amounts are announced publicly.  If you would prefer not to have your scholarship announced publicly, you must request and submit a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form as well as notify the Registration Office that you wish your records be marked “confidential.”  To request a FERPA form, please contact the SLIM Business Office at slimbusiness@emporia.edu.  Or submit a written request to:

SLIM MLS Scholarship Essay Topics

You must compose a three- to five-page essay in response to the semester’s announced Scholarship Essay Topic.  It is SLIM’s goal to reward students’ academic energy and merit, especially to those students who demonstrate a broad understanding of LIS issues as well as the importance of LIS academic writing protocols.  Each essay should follow standard APA format and style. 

FALL 2008 (Deadline July 1)

 

Discuss the social impact of electronic resources on the mission of today's library.  Please specify a type of library, such as school, public, academic, or special.

 

 

SPRING 2009 (Deadline October 1)

 

Provide a contemporary interpretation of Ranganathan's (1931) fifth law of library science:  "[a] library is a growing organism."

 

 

SLIM Scholarships Information

Martha Kruse Furbur Scholarship

Martha Kruse Furbur earned her library certificate from SLIM in 1938.  During her tenure at the William Allen White Library, she was responsible for cataloging 6,000 volumes in William Allen White Library before finishing her school librarianship certificate from SLIM.  She spent her career working in public libraries.  Hers is the single largest scholarship endowment in the history of Emporia State University.

American Bindery Fellowship

Awarded to MLS students from Kansas.

Arne H. Richards Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Richards was a government documents librarian at Kansas State University at the time of his death. He was very active in the library profession on a national level. This scholarship is for students majoring in library science with an emphasis in government documents.

Beth Warner Josserand Memorial Scholarship

Students majoring in the Master’s degree program are eligible to apply.

Elsie Howard Pine Memorial Fund and Library Science Scholarship

Elsie Pine’s teaching career spanned more than forty years. Her passion inspired and touched a countless number of children in many ways. The scholarship was established by her admiring students and is awarded to a SLIM major who is a graduate of a Kansas high school.

Florence S. Toedman Trust Scholarship


Florence S. Toedman was the librarian for many years at the Parsons, Kansas Junior College, which is now Labette County Community College.

Students majoring in library science are eligible to apply.

Glennie and John E. King Scholarship

This fund honors Glennie King, the wife of former ESU President John E. King and a SLIM graduate. SLIM students are eligible to apply.

Judy M. Pitts Memorial Scholarship

Judy M. Pitts Memorial Scholarship: Dr. Pitts was as an assistant professor in SLIM at the time of her death. Preference is given to students working in the school library field.

Kingman Carnegie Library School

SLIM students who graduated from a Kansas high school in the following counties are eligible: Kingman, Harper, Barber, Pratt, Stafford, or Reno. 

Library Science Scholarship

Students seeking an education in Library Science are eligible to apply.

Lucile V. Litchfield Scholarship

Ms. Litchfield taught classes in Children's Literature and Book Selection and was in charge of the SLIM Library from 1964 to 1968. The scholarship was established by her son, Meredith, who earned his MLS from SLIM and followed in his mother's footsteps with a career in librarianship. Ms. Litchfield established the W.A. Van Voris Scholarship in memory of her father.

All SLIM students are eligible to apply.

Richard, John, and Valeta Richel Scholarship

Richard, John, and Valeta Richel Scholarship: John and Valeta Richel graduated from Emporia in the 1930's and established this scholarship in memory of their son, Richard. The scholarship is awarded to students in the Master of Library Science program.

Sarah R. Reed Scholarship

Sarah Rebecca Reed, was the Director of the School of Library Science from 1975 to 1978 and was actively involved with the American Library Association throughout her long career. This award has been made available through contributions from friends, faculty members, and students of SLIM.

Theda Ashley Scholarship

Graduate students majoring in any of the academic programs offered by the School of Library and Information Management.

W. A. Van Voris Memorial Scholarship

All SLIM students are eligible to apply.

Mike Printz/Econo-Clad SLIM Scholarship

A 1964 SLIM graduate, Mike Printz was a nationally known school librarian through his involvement with YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association).

The scholarship is awarded to SLIM students intending to become school library specialists.

Other Scholarships
 

To receive information about scholarships offered by the American Library Association, request a copy of the booklet entitled Financial Assistance for Library and Information Studies from COE, AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, 50 E. Hurton Street, Chicago, IL 60611. Send $1.00 to cover postage and handling. 
Kansas Library Association Scholarship. Amount available:$500-$2000. Applicant must be a KLA member, accepted into the SLIM MLS or PhD program, and preference is given to residents of KS. Apply by July 1. (Need Adobe Acrobat Reader to download scholarship application.)
Special Library Association Scholarship . SLA offers more than $30,000 annually through five different scholarships. Students must be members of SLA.
