Information Management Certificate

Program overview

Content management. Knowledge management. Competitive intelligence. Information architecture. Data mining. What do these activities have in common? They’re all possible means by which organizations functioning in competitive business environments identify, organize, and make sense of the data flowing around them—creating information critical to the decision-making process.

The Information Management Certificate program (IMC) focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for library and information management professionals to contribute to their organization’s bottom line by delivering quality services promptly, economically, and efficiently; adding value to data to create useful information; providing needed and missing information that will enable businesses to be successful; solving customer problems by taking a "big picture" approach; and customizing information services to meet the unique needs of internal and external customers of the organization.

The IMC program builds on the foundation provided by the Emporia State University , School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) master degree program emphasizing the special knowledge and skills necessary for information professionals working in dynamic business environments.

The program is a rigorous 18-hour subset of the MLS degree program. It requires a 3.5 grade point average in a set of required and elective courses. The coursework requires knowledge of current business practice, extensive research using print and electronic business information resources, “repackaging” relevant information into print and electronic formats appropriate to internal and external organization customers, and effective oral and written business communication skills. The IMC experience culminates with a 120-hour practicum in the “real world” setting provided by a company or business-related public agency.
