Archives Studies Certificate
The School of Library and Information Management is now offering the Archives Studies Certificate. The very fast rate in which information is being produced today, and in very diverse formats, has increased interest in archival work, records management, and preservation. The Archives Studies Certificate (ASC) Program at SLIM is developed to prepare students to meet the challenges of arranging, describing, and organizing information in diverse formats, and providing access to, as well as preserving, this information. The program also prepares students to work in archival and special collections settings.
In the Archives Studies Certificate Program, students pay particular attention to :
- The diverse formats in which information is organized and delivered and the resulting complexity of information; organization, storage, maintenance, and preservation.
- Ways of providing access to and preserving materials that are of enduring value and serve as the cultural memory of a society; and
- The uniqueness of archives materials and library special collections and the techniques and processes that are necessary to manage and maintain these materials and collections.
The ASC Program is a 18-credit hour program. Students enroll in 18 credit hours of core classes that include the following:
LI 809 (3 credits) - Introduction to Archives
LI 827 (3 credits) - Preservation Strategies
LI 818 (2 credits) - Arrangement and Description
LI 849 (2 credits) - Information and Records Management
HI 815 (3 credits) - Research Seminar (this is a seminar class in the history department)
LI 873 (3-6 credits) - Archives Practicum
In addition to these core classes, students should enroll in other classes that are specifically relevant to working in an archives or special collections setting. Students should consult with the ASC Program Coordinator with regards to these classes.
