Invitation 

You are invited to participate in Sofia 2000, an international conference to explore the theme of Libraries in the Age of Internet 8-10 November 2000, Sofia, Bulgaria. Sofia 2000 is part of a highly successful international conference series hosted in Kansas, City, Kansas (1995) and Warsaw, Poland (1997). The series is designed to explore the impact of globalization and change on development of libraries and information infrastructures. 

Organized by the library schools of Emporia State University, Kansas USA and the University of Sofia, Bulgaria, Sofia 2000 will bring together a wide range of experts in library and information infrastructure, technology, international development and policy.  

 

Program Content 
On-going social, political, and economic changes in western, central and eastern Europe call for a dialog between stakeholders in the information professions on development of library and information services in the context of the communication revolution. Issues of democratic and economic reforms, digital technology, information access and use, social change and democracy will constitute the core themes of the conference. 

 

Core issues to be explored at the conference: 

  • Local, national, and global library cooperation and network systems

  • Sources for and managing fund and partnerships

  • Library services and information delivery systems

  • Electronic publishing

  • Preservation and digitization of information sources

  • Infrastructure development

  • Professional development and training

  • Data base creation and management

  • Mediated and end-user services

  • Library school curriculum

  • Information/knowledge management

  • National/international information legal and policy frameworks.

 

Call for Papers 
You are invited to submit abstracts that address these core issues. Presentation will be of 20 minute duration. A copy of the abstract (250 words), typed (presenter’s name, title) should reach the conference organizer by 15 August 2000. Program decisions will be made by 1 September.
