James G. Neal has recently taken
a position as the Sheridan Director at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins
University. From 1989 to 1995, he was the Dean of University Libraries at Indiana
University, where he provided administrative leadership for a system of 57 libraries on
eight campuses supporting over 100,000 students and 3,700 faculty. He has also held
administrative positions in the libraries at Pennsylvania State University, the University
of Notre Dame, and the City University of New York. A 1969 Russian Studies graduate of
Rutgers University, Neal did his graduate work in history and library science at Columbia
University. He holds positions of leadership in several professional organizations,
including the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research
Libraries, the American Society for Information Science and the Library Administration and
Management Association. Current professional activities include President of the Library
Administration and Management Association (1992-93), and attendance as the head of the
Indiana delegation at the 1991 White House Conference on Libraries and Information
Services.
A frequent conference speaker, consultant and
published researcher, his areas of focus have been workforce planning for libraries, the
development and implementation of new information technologies, human resource
development, and international librarianship. He is co-editor of the new JAI Press series
on Advances in Information Technology. He is also a member of the faculty at
Indianas School of Library and Information Science, teaching courses in academic
librarianship, strategic planning, research in librarianship, and personnel
administration.
