Information literacy is a life-long learning process that incorporates the knowledge and skill required to find information, to evaluate information, and to use information effectively.
The American Library Association/Association of College and Research Libraries has defined the concept of information literacy as incorporating "a set of abilities" in which individuals can "master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning" (Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/standards.pdf)
