The Globenet conference on Information and Restructuring for Democracy was held in Warsaw, Poland, in November 1997.  The conference brought together university librarians and administrators from Central and East Europe, as well as Russia and former Russian Republics; East European specialists in history, political science, economics, and policy; and U.S. and West European university librarians.  Discussions focused on building the global information infrastructure, the role of libraries in the potential restructuring for democracy, and critical national and international policy issues that affect us all.

Globenet took advantage of a variety of information technologies to expand the scope of the conference, both as it was occurring and after the conference ended.  Conventional conferences traditionally produce a considerable amount of information, and information within the formal conference track is efficiently captured in the form of proceedings, presentations, and papers. However, the spontaneous exchange of ideas and points of view as well as the interactions which occur pre- and post- conference can be lost.

We have worked to preserve and enhance the knowledge gained at the conference.  These efforts, in audio-visual and text format, are presented here.

To view an audio-visual introduction to the Warsaw conference that is immediately streamed into your browser, download the RealPlayer 7.0. It installs very easily. Then, click here and the video will load and begin playing automatically.
