The Emporia Diversity Initiative (EDI), is a 3-year long (2006-2009), multi-partner project led by Emporia State University's (ESU) School of Library and Information Management (SLIM), to recruit and educate local minority library staff in Kansas, Colorado and Oregon. The EDI is funded with $857,754 dollars as a part of the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21 st Century Librarian Program awards of 2006.

The primary goal:
- Educating 18 African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian American and Pacific Islander students in the field of library science resulting in earned undergraduate, masters or doctoral degrees in preparation for library service in Kansas, Colorado and Oregon.
Secondary goals include:
- Developing "home-grown" minority leaders who can recruit and mentor a second cycle of EDI students.
- Contributing to creating more inclusive library school and work environments.
- Improving access to library services for traditionally under-served groups and communities in Kansas, Colorado, Oregon and beyond.
