Admissions Process
Criteria
for Admission
The School of Library and Information has a selective admission
policy. An admissions committee comprised
of SLIM faculty members, administrators, and student advisors carefully review applications. The committee members take
into account strengths identified from transcripts,
Graduate Record Examination scores, letters
of reference, applicant's statement of objectives,
resume, and
a personal interview that is conducted once
all other application materials have been
received.
We are looking for individuals who
are most likely to become leaders in the information
profession. Applicants who demonstrate strong evidence
of intellectual promise and leadership potential
will be admitted. The following characteristics
are necessary for admission:
- Fluency
in oral and written communication;
- Assertive personality, sensitive
and responsive to the needs of others;
- Emotional maturity and stability;
- Ability to articulate personal goals;
- Intellectual curiosity and flexibility
necessary for creative problem solving and
application of theory to practice;
- Appreciation for large and small
group participation;
- Awareness of change, ambiguity, and
risk taking;
- Positive attitude toward utilization
of technology;
- High interest in contributing to
SLIM, the information profession, and to society.

International Students
We welcome the opportunity for non-U.S. citizens
to study at SLIM. We have had students from such
diverse countries as China, Benin, the Ukraine,
Japan, India, the Philippines, and Russia attend
our MLS program. All non-U.S. citizens (including
permanent residents) must apply to SLIM through
the International Student Office. The application
procedure described earlier is the same except
for the following additions:
1. Use the ISO application form instead of the
Graduate Application.
2. A $50.00 non-refundable application fee is
required.
3. All non-native speakers must demonstrate an
adequate proficiency in English. This can be done
by taking the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language) exam (550 score required); having previously
attended a U.S. college/university; or having
completed intensive English classes at ESU before
starting classes toward the MLS.
4. Financial affidavit showing that you or your
sponsor have the ability to pay for your education
and expenses while at ESU ($10,550.00 is the current
recommended amount of money needed per year.)
