New coordinator hired for the Institute
of Continuing Education - EMPORIA, KS
The School of Library and Information Management
(SLIM) at Emporia State University, the Kansas
Library Trustee Association (KTLA), the Kansas
Library Association (KLA), and the State Library
announce the appointment of Cindi Hickey as
the new coordinator for the Institute for
Continuous Education (ICE). Through a unique
collaboration of SLIM, KTLA, KLA, and the
State Library, the coordinator’s position
has been transitioned from an extra-curricular
responsibility of SLIM faculty to a part-time
professional position. ICE now shares office
space with KLA in the annex of the Topeka
& Shawnee County Public Library, 1020
SW Washburn, Topeka, KS 66604, 785-235-0010.
“The KLA Executive Committee and Council
members are pleased to embark on this collaborative
venture as the continuing education of Kansas
library professionals is a priority for the
association”, said Rosanne Goble, Executive
Director, KLA. “We all view Hickey's
appointment as a plus for KLA and for the
state of Kansas, and are delighted to have
someone of her caliber and experience in the
field working with ICE.”
Hickey will be responsible for providing leadership
in the coordination, development, and delivery
of continuing education for library trustees,
librarians, and library staff throughout the
state. She will work closely with KLTA, KLA,
the State Library, SLIM’s Library Services
Certificate Program, and the Kansas regional
library systems.
Ms. Hickey holds a Master of Library Science
from Emporia State University and a Bachelor
of Arts in Radio and Television from the University
of Kansas. Since 1996, she has been working
as a library consultant specializing in training
for public librarians. Her projects include
individualized Internet training at numerous
tribal centers in Washington for the state
library, the development of a continuing education
web course for the Nebraska Library Commission,
and the development and maintenance of Pathways
to Planning, a self-contained, web-based planning
handbook for the Northeast Kansas Library
System.
Duane Johnson, State Librarian said that he
is ..."pleased and excited that Cindi
is willing to lead the institute. Cindi is
a creative educator who can work with librarians
and trustees in all areas of library service.
Cindi and the institute are a great new combination
for advancing library education."
